MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- A major personal computer company known for its business-oriented laptops is breaking out with a new kind of notebook designed for the general public.

Microsoft is facing increasing pressure on its Windows cash cow as some corporate customers stage a rare revolt over upgrading to Vista, which launched with much fanfare in January 2007. Last week, Microsoft reported a 24% decline in Windows sales in the third quarter.
